It brought our 150 square foot (the size of an average bedroom) testing room to the ideal 45% relative humidity in 90 minutes. It reached a maximum humidity of 50.3% at the end of our testing period, placing it near the middle of our humidifier lineup. This model boasts many features common among other premium models, including a self-regulating humidistat that enables set-it-and-forget-it usage, without risk of oversaturating the air. You also have the option to add essential oils to an included aromatherapy pad, enabling it to perform as a double-duty diffuser.

According to manufacturer instructions, the Levoit Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart should be placed at least 12 feet from walls to avoid issues with the built-in humidity sensor. Our testers noticed a slightly higher reading from the built-in humidity sensor when compared to the industrial humidity meter used in our testing process.

The Levoit Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart was a standout performer in its hassle-free cleaning, which earned it high marks thanks to a removable lid on the water tank that provided unfettered access to clean all areas of the tank with ease. The advantage of a removable lid enabled our testers to see and reach in and clean all the corners and crevices of the tank. Even our testers with larger hands had no issues reaching inside the tank for cleaning. This model was also the only one we tested that included a cleaning brush in the package, adding the ability to clean the tank more thoroughly.

The manual recommends never using a dishwasher, detergents, or immersing the base of the unit in water when cleaning. Instead, it instructs users to follow a detailed process involving swirling water in the tank and soaking components in a white vinegar solution for a total of 30-40 minutes. It took our testers a full 45 minutes, including the soaking time, to follow the instructions step by step. However, the fully accessible water tank and removable parts make it easy to access all areas that need to be cleaned.

User Friendliness

Again, the Levoit Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart distinguished itself from competitors in its usability. It had near-perfect marks in our interface and controls evaluation and perfect marks in our refilling and emptying test.

The body of the Levoit Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart has four buttons controlling the power, sleep, light (two brightness settings), and intensity (auto, low, medium, and high). Filling and cleaning the 300S is easy, thanks to several key features and a unique design element. While the 1.2-gallon and 7.5-inch high water tank is larger than others, two recessed handles located on either side of the tank make carrying and holding it easy, even when full. Furthermore, thanks to the completely removable tank lid that yields a 6-inch opening at the top of the tank, it's easy to fill from most sinks. The top-filling nature prevents the need to ever flip the tank for filling or installation, and our testers were pleased to note no spills or splashes when carrying the full tank or reinstalling it on the base of the unit.

Operating Cost

The Levoit Classic 300S Ultrasonic Smart is on the more expensive side compared to most models in our review.

Its power consumption is average and economical, using 0.03 kWh per hour — a middling performance for our annual electricity usage test.

Its higher-than-average list price is the main contributor to its overall operating cost performance, with an estimated lifetime cost of $119. In our opinion, this feels rather steep for a humidifier unless you don't expect to use it very often.
