Our Verdict

While the Ace by RAVPower couldn't claim the top spot, it distinguishes itself from the rest of the batteries that we tested by having an unmatched capacity. This portable battery pack can charge typical smartphones 4 or 5 times or smaller tablets 2 or 3 times, ensuring that you are never caught with a dead battery with any of your devices. While this battery pack is a bit heavy and bulky to carry around in a pocket, it easily fits in a bag or backpack. It's a bit more expensive than some of the smaller batteries but is the best option if you are heading off the grid for a few days and want to make sure you don't run out of juice, earning it the Top Pick for Maximum Capacity award.

REASONS TO AVOID
Much less portable in a pocket
Takes a long time to recharge

Our Analysis and Test Results

This portable battery pack finished right behind the Anker PowerCore Speed 20000 and ahead of the Tzumi Endurance AC 12000. The RAVPower Ace 22000 is just a bit less portable than the Anker PowerCore Speed, but performed a bit better in our capacity tests. It is about equally convenient to use as the Anker PowerCore Speed and takes about the same amount of time to recharge. However, the RAVPower costs quite a bit less. The Tzumi costs quite a bit less than the RAVPower and is a bit easier to fit in a pocket, but has less capacity and takes forever to recharge.

Portability

For our portability assessment, we compared and score how it felt to have one of these portable chargers in your pocket — front and back — while sitting or standing and their volume and weight. This trio of tests accounts for 40% of the total score for each portable battery, with the RAVPower Ace delivering a somewhat disappointing performance, meriting a 3 out of 10 for its below average results.

This high capacity battery is at a severe disadvantage to the smaller capacity batteries when it comes to portability, being one of the largest and heaviest batteries of the entire group. This rectangular battery is 6.38" long, 2.38" wide, and almost an inch thick (0.94").

It has a considerable heft to it, weighing in just shy of a pound, or 14.59 oz. For reference, this is three times the weight of the lightest battery pack in the group.

This weight and bulk combine to make it much much harder to fit this portable battery into a pocket.

This battery actually felt alright in a back pocket when sitting down but was definitely unpleasant to sit with in a front pocket. It's also not great to walk around with, with its weight definitely being noticeable.

Capacity

For our next round of evaluations, we moved on to evaluating how much electrical energy each battery actually stored. We compared the capacity of each portable battery pack by measuring the total electrical discharge using a multimeter and a dummy electrical load and scored each one on how well it stacked up against its manufacturer's advertising claim. The RAVPower Ace 22000 claimed one of the top scores of the entire group, receiving a 7 out of 10.

This battery pack has a stated capacity of 22,000 mAh. Using the load resistor, we were able to extract about 66% of this, or 14,220 mAh, with a 2.4A discharge rate. We repeated this test with the discharge rate set for 1A, but only got a little bit more energy out of the RAVPower Ace, 14,337 mAh.

The advertising claims of this portable charger stood up very well to our testing process. RAVPower claims that this battery can charge a Samsung Galaxy S8 4.4 times, an iPhone X 4.9 times, or an iPad Mini 4 2.6 times. We got 5.3 Samsung S8 charges out of the Ace, well exceeding the expected amount.

Added Convenience

Next, we evaluated and scored all the extra features that make these battery packs better and easier to use. This group of tests is responsible for 20% of the total score, with the RAVPower Ace 22000 meriting a 5 out of 10 for its middle-of-the-road convenience factor. To decide this, we looked if there is any sort of integrated recharging method, if there are any built-in cables for charging different devices, a built-in flashlight, and if you are able to charge multiple devices at once and what type of warranty is included with each portable chargers.

The Ace 22000 can charge up to three devices at once, with each USB port able to output up to 2.4 amps.

This battery doesn't really have any integrated convenience features, lacking any built-in cables, recharging methods, or a flashlight. It does include a pair of micro USB cables and a 1-year limited warranty.

Recharge Time

For the final 10% of the total score, we compared and ranked the time it took each of these battery packs to recharge when fully depleted. We started with a totally dead battery and plugged it into a high-quality AC wall adapter brick, using the LED indicator lights to determine when the battery was completely recharged. The RAVPower Ace 22000 delivered a less than stellar performance, earning a 4 out of 10.

This portable charger took close to the longest to charge, with about 485 minutes elapsing before the LEDs showed the battery to be completely full.

Value

This portable charger isn't the best option if you are trying to shop on a budget, as there are much smaller batteries that cost quite a bit less and mean you will just have to recharge them more frequently.

Conclusion

Overall, the RAVPower Ace 22000 is the best option if you are looking at charging a bunch of different devices or if you need maximum power for an extended off-the-grid outing.
