Our favorite overall crochet kit was the Inscraft 40 Acrylic Yarn Kit. We found it particularly great for making amigurumi (stuffed animals) or other small projects. This kit includes a good spread of smaller aluminum hooks with comfortable and ergonomic slide-on rubber grips. The 9 hooks and all included accessories (stitch markers, pins, measuring tape, scissors, stitch holder, row counter, and more) fit in a small zippered hard case for easy transport. This case then fits in a zippered cube with 40 small skeins of 100% acrylic yarn in various colors. The hooks feel great in hand when crocheting, and we love that the set includes everything you need to get started on your next crochet project.

However, this kit is primarily geared towards making smaller items; the largest hook included is only 6mm. You also don't get too much yarn of any one color, and a single smaller stuffed animal will practically exhaust an entire skein. Also, there are no instructions or patterns included, so a total beginner will have to find some additional materials to get started, although the internet is awash with free tutorials and patterns, so this shouldn't be an issue. If you have plenty of your own yarn and are just looking for a top-notch kit with all the tools you need to start crocheting, the BeCraftee Crochet Hook Set is one of the best options out there. The included hooks for this kit are quite comfortable to crochet with, as they have larger molded ergonomic grips that reduce pressure points and hot spots. The hooks are deep enough to easily grab all the piles of the yarn and have enough of a point that you can work them through tighter stitches without issues. This kit also includes most of the other tools you might need, like stitch markers, a stitch counter, keepers, folding scissors, measuring tape, hook gauge/ruler, and large-eye tapestry needles for weaving in ends, and a convenient zippered storage case.

We found a few flaws with the BeCraftee Crochet Hook Set. This bare-bones set includes 9 hooks with molded rubber grips, metal tapestry needles, and some plastic stitch markers, all in a flowery zippered soft case. We like that this kit has just the essentials — minus scissors — and is much more compact than some of the larger kits with zippered binder-style cases. We also found the molded rubber grips to be quite comfortable and easy to crochet with, eliminating hand cramps caused by the smaller aluminum hooks.

While we found these grips to be considerably more comfortable than a bare hook, some of the other ergonomic sets had slightly more rounded and comfortable grips than these. The WooCrafts kit doesn't include any patterns, instructions, or yarn, and the range of sizes is more suited to smaller projects, like amigurumi, beanies, or anything else that calls for a super bulky yarn. This inexpensive kit includes 14 aluminum hooks, encompassing a much larger size range than many of the other sets and allowing you to tackle projects from the daintiest doily to a bulky blanket. We also like that this set includes a convenient travel case, a measuring tape, stitch markers, and some metal tapestry needles for weaving in your ends.

However, we found that these are significantly less comfortable and more difficult to crochet with. We experienced hand cramps using these hooks, and the shorter ones can cause a bit of a pressure point on your palm when crocheting using a knife grip. The hooks are also on the shallower side. Moreover, this kit lacks yarn, patterns, and instructions, so you will need to factor that into the cost when considering this kit. If you're seeking an affordable kit for a wide range of projects, this one is versatile enough to meet your needs. If you're new to crocheting and searching for a kit with plenty of patterns and instructions, we think the Mira Handcrafts 24 Acrylic Yarn Skeins set is your best bet. In addition to having all the materials and tools you might need, Mira also has a small library of free eBooks covering everything from types of stitches to sample patterns. You get a wide variety of colors with the included yarn, and we found it to be some of the highest-quality yarn of the kits we tested.

However, this kit is a little light when it comes to accessories, only including a pair of aluminum hooks and a handful of large-eye needles. The hooks aren't our favorites in terms of comfort, and we wish the kit offered a few more sizes that would support a wider range of projects. Most likely, you will eventually outgrow this kit and need to get a larger range of sizes. However, we strongly feel the Mira crochet kit, with its high-quality yarn and the included resource library, is a great option for beginners, and we readily recommend it.

For beginners seeking out a starter kit, the Knit Picks Beginner Dishcloth Kit is definitely worth considering. This kit includes a 6mm wooden crochet hook, a printed instruction book, three skeins of variegated yarn, and a single metal tapestry needle. The booklet features plenty of pictures and starts right from the basics, assuming that the user is a total novice. We found the larger wooden hook visually appealing and quite comfortable to crochet with, as well.

The yarn included in this kit is on the thin side — just a bit less bulky than a typical worsted weight, in our opinion. This can make it difficult for beginners to get their stitch tension right, as it's very easy to tighten the loops too much. The yarn also tends to grab a bit more with a wooden hook than an aluminum one. Despite this issue, the Knit Picks is one of our all-time favorite kits for beginners, and we think it's a good way to get into the hobby.

If you have ever been looking for a way to combine fiber arts and fan art, then the Harry Potter Crochet Kit is a great option, and makes a great gift to boot. This cute kit includes just about everything you might need to crochet a tiny Harry and Dobby with his sock. The included book has very thorough and clear directions, with patterns for plenty of other witches and wizards if you are willing to supply your own yarn once you have exhausted the included materials.

While the amigurumis produced are undeniably adorable, they also are quite intricate and complex. We could definitely see a novice crocheter becoming quite frustrated with this kit, especially with the included novelty hook. While the plastic hook fashioned to look like Harry's wand is a fun idea, we found it to be much less comfortable and much harder to crochet with due to its compliant nature. As the wand also doesn't seem to have convinced the yarn to crochet itself — albeit with our admittedly limited knowledge of incantations — we would suggest using more traditional hooks for this somewhat complicated project. That said, it's a great kit for an intermediate/advanced crocheter who wants to add some magic to their lives or give a fun gift to a crochet-adept friend, but, as a standalone kit, it's definitely far from our favorite.

The 4M Easy-To-Do Crochet Kit is an all-in-one kit for your kids to try out crocheting. This kit includes a pair of stubby plastic hooks, a yarn needle, several small skeins of yarn, and complete instructions for starting and a few projects. We like that the patterns are aimed at total beginners — along with flipped diagrams for left-handers — and that they give you some creative freedom when it comes to putting your own twist on the projects.

However, this kit is far from perfect. The plastic hooks are very stubby and can be quite uncomfortable to crochet with. The tip of the hooks also had a slight bit of flashing that can catch on the yarn. This, combined with the included yarn's propensity to split, made for a frustrating experience. This is an inexpensive kit that gives some exposure to crocheting and can get you through a project or two, but we think it's going to be outgrown very quickly.

The Darn Good Yarn DIY Cactus Kit comes with everything you need to make a trio of adorable amigurumi cacti, perfect for those that perpetually forget to water their desk plants. This kit includes both knitting and crochet patterns for all three cacti, as well as wooden knitting needles and a plastic crochet hook, and a tapestry needle. It also has all the different yarns you might need, as well as polyester stuffing.

Unfortunately, the included plastic hook is so flimsy that it's almost impossible to use. Also, the cacti patterns are not super easy for a beginner to take on. This kit isn't really geared toward beginners. It's also not particularly versatile, as you can't do much beyond the three projects without getting more yarn and more tools since the included hook must be upgraded. It might be a nice option if you are an established crocheter with a limited selection of colors on hand, but we would suggest an alternative kit to just about everyone.

We compared the ergonomics and how comfortable it is to crochet with the included hooks, as well as the quality of the included materials and instructions. Analysis and Test Results

We split our testing process into multiple weighted metrics — Hook Quality and Comfort, Beginner-Friendliness, Versatility, and Included Accessories — with a side-by-side comparison of the standout performers in each metric discussed in the sections below.

Hook Quality and Comfort

First and foremost, we compared the ergonomics of the included hooks, as well as how easy they are to crochet with. We also took into account the number of hooks and the range of sizes included with each kit.

Overall, we liked the hooks from the Inscraft 40 Acrylic Yarn Kit and the BeCraftee Crochet Hook Set, with the WooCrafts Large-Eye Blunt Needle Kit just trailing them slightly. The Inscraft hooks and the BeCraftee hooks both have molded rubber grips that make them considerably more comfortable to use than a typical crochet hook. These hooks are pointy enough to poke through tighter stitches and are deep enough to easily grab all of the yarn without splitting piles off.

We found the grips work well with either a knife or pencil grip and, as a result, are some of our favorite products to use. Both the Inscraft and the BeCraftee include 9 hooks ranging in size from 2.25mm to 6mm but have different intervals for the smaller hooks. The Inscraft includes a 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, and a 6mm hook, while the BeCraftee has a 2.25mm, 2.75mm, 3.25mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, and a 6mm hook.

The WooCrafts Large-Eye crochet hooks also have an ergonomic rubber grip, but we found them slightly less comfortable to hold than both the BeCraftee and the Inscraft. We appreciate that the WooCrafts hooks have a longer neck, but the blunter tip can be a bit more difficult to get through tighter stitches. The WooCrafts Large-Eye kit also includes 9 hooks that are identical to the sizes included in the Inscraft kit. Finally, we found the 6mm wooden hook included with the Knit Picks Learn to Crochet Kit to be quite comfortable to hold — and it looks great, too.

However, the wooden Knit Picks hook can be a bit more difficult for a beginner to use, as it takes some time to get used to the deeper hook and the sharper edge, making it much easier to split the piles of yarn apart.

Both the Mira Handcrafts and the BCMRUN hooks are standard aluminum hooks and are about the same regarding comfort and quality. These hooks crochet well, hooking yarn easily and offering a low-friction surface for the yarn with their anodized aluminum coatings. Unfortunately, we found hand cramps and hot spots to be much more prevalent when using these hooks, particularly with the smaller sizes.

We favor the BCMRUN hooks over the Mira Handcrafts, as it includes far more hooks. The Mira kit only includes a 4.5mm and a 5.5mm hook, while the BCMRUN includes one of the largest ranges of sizes out of any of the kits we reviewed, covering 2mm - 10mm with its 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 8, 9, and 10mm hooks.

The 4M Easy-To-Do Crochet Kit comes next on our list, having the worst hooks that we found actually functional. It has a pair of stubby plastic 8mm hooks, but we didn't find them comfortable to hold or easy to crochet with. They had some sharp edges and residual mold flashing that would catch and split the yarn, and the shorter length definitely led to some hand cramps and odd pressure points when used by an adult. However, they could be alright for a child or someone with very petite hands after you rounded off the sharp edges.

The Harry Potter Crochet Kit and the Darn Good Yarn Cactus Kit had some of the worst hooks of our test fleet. The wand-shaped hook with the Harry Potter Kit is actually quite comfortable to hold, but we found it funky and difficult to crochet with, opting to swap to an aluminum hook very early on for those projects. The minuscule hook included with the Cactus Kit is incredibly bendy and nearly impossible to crochet with. We ended up opting for a more traditional hook for the completion of our cactus.

Beginner-Friendliness

For this metric, we looked at each of these kits from a beginner's perspective. We looked at the quality of the included instructions, the difficulty of the pattern, and if you needed any tools or materials beyond what is included in the kit.

If you are a total novice, then we think the Mira Handcrafts 24 Acrylic Skeins is a great option. Of the kits that include yarn, we think the Mira had some of the highest quality yarn and was least prone to splitting in our tests and alleviating one of the most common sources of frustration for beginners. Mira also provides a small library of free eBooks with patterns and directions to get you started. The included hooks, needles, and yarn also fit in a resealable case, and the only other tools you might need is a pair of scissors for cutting the yarn if you don't want to just snap it. It doesn't have any stitch markers, but you can just use a scrap of another color of yarn to make do.

We also think the Knit Picks Learn To Crochet Beginner Kit is another good option for those just starting. This kit includes a very thorough written instruction manual, making it a good option for anyone who would rather read physical manuals over digital ones. The pattern for the dishcloth is very simple and a great novice project. This kit has everything you need to make multiple dishcloths, but the yarn/pattern combo can make it a little difficult to get the tension right at first.

The 4M Easy-To-Do Crochet Kit also contains a full set of printed instructions for a handful of different projects and includes a pair of crochet hooks and a needle. The instructions are quite comprehensive but can be a bit hard to follow, as you need to jump around to different sets of steps depending on what you are trying to make. We don't think the patterns are too difficult, but we found the included hook and yarn make crocheting so difficult that it can be very frustrating.

We think the Inscraft 40 Acrylic Yarn Kit is the next best kit for beginners. While this kit doesn't come with any patterns, it includes everything else a beginner might need — yarn, needles, stitch markers, and a solid assortment of comfortable hooks. The included yarn is a great choice for a beginner, and as there are so many free resources and beginner patterns available online, the lack of instructions isn't too big of a roadblock.

The BeCraftee, WooCrafts, and the BCMRUN are next when it comes to being beginner-friendly. These kits have all the tools someone starting might need but lack both instructions and yarn. Yarn is fairly inexpensive, and these kits have everything a beginner might need, but they are admittedly far from an all-in-one kit.

At the back of the group is the Harry Potter and Darn Good Yarn DIY Cactus kits, as both are poor choices for beginners.

While we will admit that these kits include everything you need — instructions, hooks, yarn, and accessories — the patterns are quite difficult for a novice. These kits are great for an experienced crocheter who wants a self-contained project, but there are much better options out there for beginners.

Versatility

For our versatility metric, we compared the kits on how soon you might outgrow them or need to purchase additional tools or materials. However, the yarn skeins are a bit small, so you will probably need to find other yarn if you are looking for a large monochromatic project.

It includes a bit less yarn and only two sizes of crochet hooks, so you will be a bit more limited in both the number of projects and the variety you can take on before needing more yarn or hooks but still has more than enough for many hours of crocheting.

The hook-only kits are next, with the BCMRUN being just a bit more versatile than the WooCrafts or the BeCraftee. It has a larger range of sizes, allowing you to tackle some quick crochet projects with chunky or super bulky yarn that wouldn't be possible with the BeCraftee or WooCrafts set. However, all three have a large range of hook sizes for a bunch of different projects — as long as you buy the yarn for them.

The Knit Picks Beginner Dishcloth Kit is designed for making dishcloths, but there's still enough extra yarn that you could make a few other items to match, like a placemat or coaster. This is followed by the 4M Easy-To-Do Crochet Kit. This kit comes with a small amount of yarn, but we would imagine most people would quickly be in the market for not only more yarn but also better hooks.

At the back of the group when it comes to versatility, the Harry Potter Crochet Kit and the Darn Good Yarn DIY Cactus Kit are essentially designed for completing the included patterns, and that's about it. The Harry Potter Kit offers a handful of other patterns, but you'll need to purchase additional yarn if you want to create more magical beings beyond Harry and Dobby. We again feel that most people would be in the market for more yarn and more hooks rather quickly with these kits.

We also rated and scored the different non-crochet hook accessories included with each kit. The Inscraft and BeCraftee take the lead, both having a measuring tape, stitch markers, yarn needles, ruler/gauge chart, scissors, stitch holders, and a counter. However, we think the Inscraft has just a slight edge, as it also includes some knitting accessories, metal yarn needles compared to plastic, and multiple styles of stitch markers.

The WooCrafts kit offered some plastic stitch markers and a variety of metal yarn needles in addition to the hooks. The remaining kits are all fairly limited when it comes to accessories, only including some yarn needles for finishing. However, the Harry Potter Crochet Kit also includes some safety eyes and embroidery floss for your first two projects.
